I picture Winchester would of saved and maintained the barrel chamber reamers for all the various 271+ calibers that they manufactured. Along with an abundance of barrel blanks laying about. This is certainly from the 1916 brochure from the factory’s goings-on.

The “WP” evidence mark was utilized after the barrel and receiver had been mated, assembled and completed. This is highly apparent to the firearms manufactured in the late teens via early 30s in the event the blue flaked (popped) off if the proof was struck to the receiver body.

The “WP” proof mark was applied once the barrel and receiver had been mated, assembled and completed. This is highly evident within the firearms created inside the late teens by means of early 30s if the blue flaked (popped) off if the proof was struck over the receiver frame.

For barrels & receivers produced right after 1905: Receivers getting the “WP” proof but no “WP” or “Oval P” evidence over the barrel would point out the barrel was changed beyond Winchester using a pre-1905 barrel.
